Houston has been the other flagship car-dependent example throughout this series, alongside Dallas and LA, and the data backs it up almost exactly: a citywide Walk Score of 47 to 48 — just two points shy of even "Somewhat Walkable" — across roughly 600 square miles of a metro area famous for having no formal zoning code at all. Whatever geography you associate with Houston, "built for walking" almost certainly isn't part of it.

📊 What the Walkability Numbers Actually Say
Montrose is Houston's clear walkability leader, generally scoring in the mid-to-high 80s (with some block-level scores climbing into the 90s) — an artsy, historically LGBTQ+-associated neighborhood dense with restaurants, galleries, and nightlife, and consistently ranked among the safest neighborhoods in the city as well as the most walkable.
Midtown runs close behind, typically scoring in the mid-to-high 80s, sitting on a genuine street grid between Downtown and the Texas Medical Center, with the METRORail Red Line running directly through it — a rare Houston combination of walkable nightlife and real transit access. The Heights trails the other two at around 73 to 75, historic and residential, walkable in the sense of a pleasant weekend stroll along 19th Street rather than a bar-hop.

Midtown trades some of Montrose's arts-district identity for straightforward nightlife and transit convenience — the METRORail connection to Downtown and the Medical Center in minutes makes it Houston's best answer to "walkable enough for daily life, connected enough for everything else."
The Heights is the slower, more residential option of the three — genuinely charming for a weekend stroll and a date-night dinner, but built more around repeat neighborhood sightings than a big night out.
📍 What Venue Selection Actually Does Here
A venue in Montrose or Midtown pulls a crowd already comfortable with walkable density — genuinely rare in Houston, so people who live there tend to use it. A venue in The Heights pulls a more settled, date-focused crowd rather than a big-group nightlife one. And in Houston specifically, checking whether a venue sits inside the tunnel-connected Downtown core versus an exposed outdoor corridor matters more in July and August than it does the rest of the year.

If you're in The Heights, lean into the neighborhood's slower, repeat-encounter pace rather than expecting Midtown's nightlife energy.
If you're anywhere else in Houston's sprawl — which is most of it, given the city's lack of zoning — check the specific block before assuming a neighborhood's reputation applies to your exact address, and don't rule out summer as a dead season just because it's hot; the tunnel system and plenty of air-conditioned venues exist for exactly this reason.
